Material Introduction

VITON AED is a specialized explosion-proof fluororubber in the fluororubber series of Chemours (formerly DuPont). AED stands for Anti-Explosive Decompression, and it is a sealing material specifically developed to address the failure issue of “Rapid Gas Decompression” (RGD) in high-pressure gas environments.

VITON AED exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance, with a standard operating temperature range of -26℃ to 220℃. It maintains stable elasticity and sealing performance even in a continuous high-temperature environment of 200℃, and can withstand short-term peak temperatures of 230℃ to 240℃ without immediate failure. The high bond energy carbon-fluorine bond in its molecular structure endows the material with exceptional thermal stability and chemical inertness.

In terms of explosion decompression resistance, VITON AED stands out as its most prominent feature. By incorporating special nano-scale reinforcing agents into fluororubber, the material’s high-strength performance is greatly enhanced, making it exceptionally resistant to tearing and bursting during rapid decompression under high pressure conditions. This characteristic has enabled it to pass international authoritative certifications such as NORSOK M-710, making it the preferred sealing material for high-pressure applications in the oil and gas industry.

In terms of medium resistance, VITON AED exhibits excellent resistance to petroleum gas, fuel oil, lubricating oil, mineral oil, hydraulic oil, and various chemical media, including dilute acids and dilute alkalis. Additionally, it boasts superior ozone resistance, weathering resistance, and low permeability.

It should be noted that VITON AED is not resistant to strong polar solvents such as ketones (e.g. acetone), esters (e.g. ethyl acetate), ethers, and some amines with low molecular weight. Furthermore, the brittle temperature of the standard AED formulation is approximately -25℃ to -26℃, and its elasticity will significantly decrease at lower temperatures. For application scenarios with specific low-temperature requirements, low-temperature modified grades such as VITON GLT AED (temperature resistance -45℃ to 215℃) can be selected.

In terms of hardness, VITON AED seals typically offer multiple grades ranging from Shore A 75 to 95 degrees, with the high-hardness versions of 90-95 degrees being more suitable for high-pressure explosion-proof conditions.

Application Field

VITON AED seals, which are sealing rings (commonly in the form of O-rings) made of VITON AED explosion-proof fluororubber, play an irreplaceable role in multiple demanding industries with extremely high safety requirements, due to their excellent three characteristics: “explosion-proof decompression resistance, high temperature resistance, and medium resistance”.

Oil and Gas Industry: This is the core application area of VITON AED. In high-pressure gas environments such as offshore gas fields, natural gas transmission pipelines, valves, and quick-opening blind plates in separators, ordinary rubber seals are prone to burst and fail due to rapid gas expansion during rapid pressure relief. VITON AED seals, with their excellent explosion and decompression resistance, can effectively prevent such accidents and ensure the safe operation of oil and gas equipment.

Aerospace: In the aerospace industry, AED certification signifies that seals meet the industry’s stringent safety standards. VITON AED seals are employed in critical sealing areas of aircraft fuel, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, ensuring absolute sealing safety under extreme pressure and temperature fluctuations.

Chemical processing and refining industry: In chemical plants and refineries, the reaction vessels, pumps, valves, and pipeline connections require seals that can withstand long-term exposure to high-temperature fuel oil, lubricating oil, and various corrosive chemical media. VITON AED sealing rings are capable of resisting the erosion of these media and maintaining stable performance under high-temperature conditions, ensuring the tightness and safety of the production process.

Vacuum engineering: In equipment requiring high vacuum levels, VITON AED sealing rings are widely used for sealing vacuum piping systems due to their extremely low gas permeability, ensuring stable maintenance of the system’s vacuum level.

Automotive manufacturing: In high-temperature and high-pressure areas such as automotive engine fuel systems, turbochargers, and transmissions, VITON AED seals provide reliable sealing solutions. Their excellent high-temperature fuel resistance effectively prevents leakage and enhances the power performance and reliability of automobiles.

In addition, VITON AED seals can be produced according to international standards (American Standard AS568, Chinese Standard GB/T 3452.1, Japanese Standard JIS, and European Standard ISO 3601-1), and offer two process options: molding and turning, to meet the needs of different sizes and application scenarios.

In summary, VITON AED materials and their seals, with their unique “anti-explosion decompression” core performance, coupled with excellent high-temperature resistance and medium resistance characteristics, have become the preferred solution for addressing high-pressure gas sealing challenges in industries with high safety requirements such as oil and gas, aerospace, and chemical processing, providing important guarantees for the safe production of modern industry.
