Material Introduction

Fluoroelastomer (FKM), with Viton being the most recognized brand name, is a high-performance synthetic rubber characterized by exceptional chemical resistance and outstanding high-temperature performance. Based on its monomer composition and fluorine content, common types include Viton A (a dipolymer fluoroelastomer), Viton B (a terpolymer fluoroelastomer), and Viton F (a high-fluorine-content fluoroelastomer).

Fluoroelastomer exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance, maintaining its physical and mechanical properties over prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. The typical service temperature range for standard FKM is -20°C to 200°C; low-temperature specialty grades can operate as low as -40°C, while high-temperature grades such as Viton F can withstand intermittent exposure up to 260°C.

Fluoroelastomer is renowned for its outstanding chemical resistance, demonstrating excellent resistance to a wide range of oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, mineral acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons. It is compatible with high-vacuum environments and exhibits superior resistance to ozone, weathering, and aging. However, FKM is not resistant to low-molecular-weight esters, ethers, ketones, certain amines, or ammonia gas.

Fluoroelastomer possesses good physical and mechanical properties, including relatively high tensile strength (typically between 10–20 MPa), good abrasion resistance, and good tear strength. Its low gas permeability makes it suitable for high-vacuum and high-pressure sealing systems.Fluoroelastomer also offers good flame retardancy; gases produced during decomposition at high temperatures inhibit flame propagation, imparting self-extinguishing characteristics. Its electrical insulation properties are moderate, and it is generally not recommended for applications requiring high dielectric strength.

Application Field

Viton A/B/F seals, manufactured from various types of fluoroelastomer (FKM), are widely employed in demanding sealing applications due to their outstanding resistance to elevated temperatures and aggressive chemicals. Depending on the specific grade (A, B, or F), which differ in fluorine content, users can select the optimal class for their specific chemical environment and temperature requirements.

Automotive Manufacturing: In the automotive industry, Viton seals are extensively used in engine fuel systems, injectors, oil seals, valve stem seals, cylinder head gaskets, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. Their excellent resistance to fuels, lubricating oils, and high temperatures enables them to withstand the increasing thermal loads and chemically aggressive environments of modern engines.

Chemical & Petroleum Industries: In chemical plants, petroleum refineries, and oil & gas extraction equipment, Viton A/B/F seals are employed at pumps, valves, reactors, pipeline flanges, and instrument connections. They resist attack from thousands of chemical media, including strong acids, hydrocarbons, solvents, and crude oil, significantly enhancing equipment safety and reliability.

Aerospace: In the aerospace sector, Viton seals are utilized in critical components such as aircraft engines, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and landing gear, owing to their exceptional resistance to high temperatures, aviation fuels (e.g., JP-4, JP-8), and hydraulic fluids (e.g., Skydrol). This ensures sealing integrity under extreme conditions.

Semiconductor & Electronics Manufacturing: In semiconductor and electronics industry equipment used for wafer processing, etching, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), components are frequently exposed to corrosive process gases and plasma. Viton F (high-fluorine-content) seals offer excellent plasma resistance and are employed for vacuum chamber and gas line seals, ensuring process purity and equipment stability.

Food & Pharmaceutical Industries: Although less common than silicone rubber, certain specialty grades of Viton seals can be used in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment involving high-temperature oils/fats or corrosive cleaning media, such as filling machine seals, hot oil circulation systems, and sterilization equipment. For such applications, grades compliant with FDA or USP Class VI standards must be selected.

General Industrial & Machinery: Additionally, Viton seals are widely applied in hydraulic systems, compressors, diesel engines, fuel pumps, cylinders, injection molding machines, molds, pressure sensors, and various industrial machinery and precision equipment requiring resistance to lubricating oils, gear oils, and brake fluids.In summary, fluoroelastomer (FKM) and its Viton A/B/F seals, by virtue of their exceptional high-temperature resistance, chemical resistance, fuel resistance, and low gas permeability, play an irreplaceable role in advanced manufacturing and demanding service environments, including automotive, chemical, aerospace, and semiconductor industries.
